How to Care for Houseplants

Just like pets, house plants can be a great source of joy and comfort in your home, especially if you start to feel a little stir-crazy cooped up indoors, because taking care of your greenery can help you feel more connected to nature.

House plants come in all types, shapes and sizes, so there’s definitely a plant out there that’s perfect for you. Try exploring the wide range of house plants by Gardeners Dream to pick one that matches your needs and preferences.

Once you find your match though, it’s important to learn how to properly take care of it so it can thrive. Whether you’re a plant parent newbie or you’ve been caring for plants for years, here are some tips on how to keep your leafy friends happy and healthy.

1. Choose the right plant for your space

Not all plants are created equal—some thrive in direct sunlight while others prefer lower light, for example.

Before you bring home a new green friend, do some research on what type of care it will need. Once you know what you’re getting into, pick a spot in your home that meets those needs. If you don’t have the right conditions for a particular plant, it’s likely to struggle (and you’ll be left feeling frustrated).

2. Make sure your pots have drainage holes

One of the most common mistakes plant parents make is not providing adequate drainage for their plants. If water can’t drain out of the pot, it will pool at the bottom and potentially damage the roots.

Remember to always check to make sure your pots have drainage holes before you add soil and plants.

3. Water your plants regularly—but don’t overwater them

One of the most important aspects of plant care is watering—but it’s also one of the easiest to mess up.

As a general rule of thumb, most plants need to be watered about once a week. Of course, there are always exceptions (plants in higher light or hotter climates may need to be watered more frequently, for example).

The best way to know if your plant needs water is to stick your finger in the soil—if it feels dry about an inch below the surface, it’s time to water.

4. Feed your plants

Plants need food (aka nutrients) to grow—just like us! If you want your plants to stay healthy and thrive, you need to feed them on a regular basis.

There are a variety of plant foods available, so do some research to find one that’s right for your specific plants. You can also ask for guidance at your local nursery or garden center.

5. Prune your plants as needed

Pruning is an important part of plant care, but it’s often overlooked. Regular pruning helps encourage growth and keep plants looking their best.

When pruning, be sure to use clean, sharp shears or scissors. Also don’t be afraid to cut off more than you think you need—the plants can usually handle it (and they’ll thank you in the long run).

Following these simple tips will help ensure that your plants stay healthy and happy. With a little bit of care, you’ll be able to enjoy your greenery for years to come.
